The Light

By: Blackstone

"There is but One God, His name is Truth, He is the Creator, He fears none, he is without hate, He never dies, He is beyond the cycle of births and death, He is self illuminated, He is realized by the kindness of the True Guru. He was True in the beginning, He was True when the ages commenced and has ever been True, He is also True now." ~Guru Nanak~

In the beginning, was blackness; that kind of inky blackness in which you cannot see anything. In fact, it wasn't even blackness, it was nothing. Nothing is very easy to describe until you realize that the word nothing is in all reality— something... In this way, it was not as though the nothing was anything. It did not have a nature. It was not good, it was not bad. It was not anything. Suddenly through the murky darkness came a voice. A deep resonating voice, one that makes a listener want to sit for hours if only to hear one word from such a voice. Wherever the sound carried, it seemed to push the nothingness out of its way. It was not as though as if there was some substance to carry the sound waves, not even anything to block them; in fact, there actually were no sound waves. But then, wherever the sound was heard it seemed to pulsate, reverberate throughout the nothingness. It carried to the farthest reaches of the nothingness and back again.

“Let there be light.” Suddenly, there was something. It came from nowhere, seeming to be born from the very words that were spoken. There seemed to be no source, no sun that the light could claim as its own. It came from everywhere, and nowhere, at the same time; pulsating joyfully as if to claim the new space as its own. Imagine a warehouse in which there is absolutely nothing except for the floor and a ceiling. It is so big that you cannot see any of the walls. It's completely dark and so you do not know where you are. Suddenly, a light bursts from the center of the room. Because there is nothing to stop the light there are no shadows, no darkness. This is how was in the beginning. There was light, but that light was ephemeral, not part of this universe, not part of this dimension. The light seemed to be connected with the voice in a very distinct relationship. It was caught in between words, the rhythms, the very essence of the voice seemed to be light.

The voice started to speak again, and more creations started to appear. It was obvious now that the voice was what was creating; the very power behind the words was enough to create time, space, matter, and energy. The drama unfolded as majestically as the finest ballet in perfect sync; everything had its place, and everything danced gracefully to its position, content only in the fact that it was doing its master's bidding.

Finally, near the end of the drama, the masterpiece was created. The epitome of all that so far had been uncovered for the display of anyone who would wish to watch, except there was no one there to watch. The pure joy of creating was enough for the master. However, his final piece, the grand finale of this majestic symphony was about to take place. The master gathered dust from the planet he had created, tenderly held in his hand, and slowly breathed life into the dust. For what seemed like an eternity, nothing happened. Then, as the master lovingly watched, a form began to take shape. Two legs, an arm, torso, fingers and toes, muscle definition --- and then, a face. The mouth and lips gently danced into position; the eyes slowly appeared from beneath the flesh; a nose timidly aligned itself to its allotted position under the eyes of its loving master. This was truly the crown of the creation. Six days before, nothing existed; now, everything.

The master gently set the form down on the earth, and watched as it slowly came to life. All the animals gathered around to see their new overseer. They watched in awe, as the newest member of the creation opened its eyes and gazed about him. Surely, this story would be told for eternity. Surely, this would be the greatest revelation, the greatest relationship ever to have been seen in the physical world: the master and his creation.

However, it was not the last. After the master had created a partner for the man, everything lived in peace for a while. But then, darkness crept back into creation. The man and his wife chose to be separated from the master. They chose death over life, darkness over light, mortality over eternity. Thus, darkness gained a foothold within the perfect creation of the master. It was not as though the master could not stop the darkness; indeed, the master had permitted the darkness to exist so that the light might be seen more clearly. Thus, darkness was not an object within itself, but rather only a contrast to the brilliance of the light.

Over the years, darkness gained more and more of a foothold through the abandonment of the light. It was not as though the light had abandoned anything, but rather that man had abandoned the light. The master saw that something would have to be done. Indeed, before the creation of time the master had known that this would have to take place. Finally, in the fullness of time, the master sent his son to conquer the darkness. The son was hailed by man is the greatest teacher that had ever lived. Yet, when they realized that his teaching proclaimed the light in the truth therein, they murdered him. This seeming triumph of darkness, this epitome in the betrayal of light, was actually the greatest triumph of the master. For, in the ensuing darkness, the light was seen most clearly. The death of the son provided a way for man to once again have a relationship with the master. This was truly the greatest triumph, the greatest love that man has ever seen.
